Week of July 7, 2019

1) Lights for Liberty Protest: On Friday, there will be widespread protests against ICE detention centers. Our members Joyce Leftly and Christina Russoniello have reserved a bus for people to get to the protest at the Elizabeth, NJ, ICE facility. Please RSVP to reserve a spot on the bus, which will be leaving from the former A&P in Clinton at 4:45 pm: https://www.evite.com/event/02D9O43MJHBZBAQIOEPJTTFE2QK34Y/rsvp. You can read more about the current state of the detention centers here: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/07/us/politics/border-centers-mcaleenan.html

2) People’s Motorcade: If you’re looking for another opportunity to protest this week, the People’s Motorcade might be a great choice. They protest every Saturday, including the upcoming one (July 13), starting at 10 am. Weather permitting, meet at the Clarence Dillon Library, 2336 Lamington Road in Bedminster. Meetup time is 9:30, with the motorcade departing at 10:00. RSVP here: https://www.facebook.com/events/2198201987108240/

3) Health Care: This week, the Trump administration and several Republican states will argue to the 5thUS Circuit Court of Appeals that the Affordable Care Act is unconstitutional. So, this is a good week to remind all three of our Members of Congress to support and strengthen the ACA, combined with policies to open up Medicare and Medicaid to more people. You can read more about the ACA court case here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/5th-circuit-decision-on-aca-could-create-political-havoc-for-gop/2019/07/07/9c1dd558-939e-11e9-b58a-a6a9afaa0e3e_story.html.

4) IGSV Summer Picnic: Our third annual summer picnic will be July 28 from 2-5 pm at Tom Koven and Barbara Cochrane’s house in Hampton. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate our work this year and to meet fellow Resisters! Please RSVP here to let us know that you’ll attend and what you can bring to share: https://www.evite.com/event/03A0BES6J4GXUQGYKEPJS5K62AGUHA/rsvp.

Quote of the Week:“I think that I’m particularly and uniquely and very deeply American. If we want to talk about the ideals that we stand for, all the songs and the anthem and sort of what we were founded on, I think I’m extremely American.” – Megan Rapinoe, two-time World Cup champion
