Week of October 17, 2021

1) Build Back Better Act: Not much attention has been paid to what is in the Build Back Better Act, but instead the focus has been on the 10-year price tag of $3.5 trillion. The WNYC show “On the Media” just had a really nice story about all of the great things in the bill, here: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/segments/bidens-build-back-better-act-on-the-media. Listen to it, and then contact our three Members of Congress to let them know that the bill has our support.

2) Election: We are in the midst of this year’s election, with Vote-by-Mail ballots already in voters’ hands and less than a week before early voting starts. Thanks to the 15 IGSV members who attended yesterday’s canvass in Clinton Township as our October group meeting! Please get in touch with your local political committee, the Murphy campaign, or the LD23 campaigns to volunteer. This is a great opportunity to practice your canvassing or phone banking skills before the 2022 Congressional election, and this year’s candidates can use your help! Gov. Murphy’s website has volunteer opportunities here: https://murphy4nj.com/get-involved/. They are coordinating many local campaign efforts up and down the ballot. You can also contact Hope and Nick’s campaign for LD23 Assembly here https://www.hopeandnick.com/#involved and Denise King’s campaign for LD23 Senate here https://www.denisetking4senate.com/get-involved.

3) November IGSV Group Meeting: For our next group meeting on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 3-4:30 pm, our Committee on US Foreign Policy has invited Dan Kovalik to speak about Nicaraguan politics in the wake of their general election (Nov. 7). Dan is a human rights lawyer and peace activist who teaches at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Based on some of his past statements, his talk is sure to be provocative. Please RSVP to indivisiblegsv@gmail.com.

4) Indivisible’s Give No Ground Project: Indivisible has started to turn toward efforts to keep Democrats in the House majority in the 2022 election. Although Congressman Malinowski is not on their current list of incumbents that they are supporting, Congressman Kim (NJ3) is. Please read up on the efforts and then consider taking their pledge: https://act.indivisible.org/signup/give-no-ground-pledge/

Quote of the week: “If you look at the world’s advanced economies, they invest an average of $14,000 per year for a toddler’s child care. America spends about $500 — 28 times less than our competitors. It holds families and our economy back. My Build Back Better Agenda will change that.” – President Biden, https://twitter.com/POTUS/status/1449511731877847049
