1) Afghan refugees: The evacuation of Afghanistan continues, and much is being discussed about how the pull-out of American troops ended up with such a chaotic result. Contact our Members of Congress and our State representatives to encourage them to welcome Afghani refugees to the US and to NJ. Congressman Malinowski has been outspoken about this (https://twitter.com/MehdiHasanShow/status/1428509655987376132), and Gov. Murphy sent a letter to the Biden administration welcoming refugees (https://twitter.com/GovMurphy/status/1429462426240626693). We need to ensure that this actually happens! Also read up on the steps that the Trump administration took that led us to this point: https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/22/politics/fact-check-pence-pompeo-haley-miller-afghanistan/index.html.
2) Recharge: Summer is almost over. Be sure to catch your breath, because the fall will be busy. State and local campaigns need volunteers for outreach to voters. The federal government needs our pressure on our Members of Congress to keep moving forward after the Trump era. And we all need community support as we continue to deal with COVID. Rest up for the marathon!
3) Keep being safe: COVID numbers are rising across the country, including in New Jersey (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/new-jersey-covid-cases.html). Keep being safe and encouraging good behavior by those around you. Here’s one take from last summer about how to discuss mask mandates: https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20200727/how-to-counter-the-anti-mask-backlash-empathy#1.
