Week of July 25, 2021

Thanks to all who came to our Summer Picnic today! We had about 40 there for great food and discussion. Please remember to support candidates who are dedicated to uplifting Truth and Equality!

1) Voting Rights: Keep calling our Members of Congress about voting rights. Here’s a nice Indivisible video about how to call your Senators: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANmUDeYLoBU. Watch this and then call!

2) AAPI Curriculum: We heard from Laura Zhang Choi today about efforts to make NJ the next state to pass a requirement for teaching Asian American and Pacific Islander history in our K-12 schools. You can follow Make us Visible NJ here: https://www.facebook.com/MakeUsVisibleNJ/. A bill is currently being considered by the State Legislature. You can read more here: https://mailchi.mp/4342d3366d37/the-aapi-bill-was-introduced-in-the-nj-senate. If you did not contact our Legislators last week, please contact them this week to ask them to support the bill! If you are in LD23, contact information is: Senator Doherty – 908-835-0552, Assemblyman DiMaio – 908-684-9550, and Assemblyman Peterson – 908-238-0251. It is past time for AAPI content to be explicitly taught!

You can also attend a webinar on August 4 at 8 pm. Register here: https://tinyurl.com/jpmuvnj

3) Volunteer: We also hear today about the next Western New Jersey Democrats Community Service Team opportunity on Tuesday, 8/24, from 9 am to noon at Grow a Row (Pittstown or Alexandria locations). Please RSVP to Susan Ayr DeNegre (sdenegre@comcast.net). This is a family-friendly, outdoor event that will help provide food for hungry people in the area.

4) Redistricting: Register here (https://indivisible.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMsdOqvrD4iH9GMoLMFvmW_2Z4xV6U86W9-) for Indivisible’s Redistricting Hearing Training on Wednesday, July 28 at 3pm ET. As states prepare to redistrict voting maps, how much do you really know about that process and the gerrymandering that often goes along with it? Take our 10-question Redistricting Quiz and see where your knowledge lands. Then, attend our Redistricting Hearing Training so that you can be informed about what resources are at your disposal on how redistricting works state by state. Indivisible will cover the most effective ways to participate in the redistricting process, including best practices for attending public hearings, participating in official online comment periods, and developing a community of interest.

Quote of the week: “Emmett Till would have turned 80 today. His life was cut short by white supremacists when he was just 14 years old. Today violence against Black lives remains a national emergency that we must confront by changing our laws—including passing our Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act.” – Senator Booker, https://twitter.com/CoryBooker/status/1419326675746164746
