Week of July 18, 2021

1) IGSV Summer Picnic: Next Sunday, July 25, please join us for a group picnic to reconnect with IGSV members and friends in person. The picnic will be at 9 West St., Annandale, starting at 4 pm. Please sign up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F4DA9A628A2FFCE9-igsv to let us know if you’ll bring your own food or a particular potluck dish to share. Either is fine! Drinks and light snacks will be provided.

All are welcome, whether you have been active recently, haven’t been to a meeting in a while, or would be joining us for the first time. All ages are welcome, too!

Group announcements will happen at 5 pm. Otherwise, the start and end times will be flexible, depending on interest.Note that if it’s raining, we will still meet under tents. If the weather is particularly bad (lightning, wind, etc.), we’ll announce a rain date for August.

Please RSVP by email to indivisiblegsv@gmail.com.

2) Protect Voting Rights: Yesterday was the one-year anniversary of Rep. John Lewis’s death. Contact our three Members of Congress this week to let them know that the best way to honor John Lewis would be to pass the bill named for him, and to pass the For the People Act. For our two Senators, again remind them that they need to reform the filibuster to help protect democracy.

3) AAPI Curriculum: Laura Zhang Choi is coordinating efforts to make NJ the next state to pass a requirement for teaching Asian American and Pacific Islander history in our K-12 schools. A bill is currently being considered by the State Legislature. You can read more here: https://mailchi.mp/4342d3366d37/the-aapi-bill-was-introduced-in-the-nj-senate?e=9399f74492&fbclid=IwAR2zqBDTkfLBDoCUb4ffHooM9_WmVW8i1HF7lZBiY4QmeM6MJtvWAuLiJ1M. This week, please call your two Assembly representatives and one State Senator to ask for their support. If you are in LD23, contact information is: Doherty – 908-835-0552, DiMaio – 908-684-9550, and Peterson – 908-238-0251. It is past time for AAPI content to be explicitly taught!

4) Volunteer Effort: The next Western New Jersey Democrats Community Service Team opportunity is Tuesday, 8/24, from 9 am to noon at Grow a Row (Pittstown or Alexandria locations). Please RSVP to Susan Ayr DeNegre (sdenegre@comcast.net). This is a family-friendly, outdoor event that will help provide food for hungry people in the area.
