1) IGSV Bylaws: With help from several of our members, we now have IGSV bylaws that are ready to be voted on by our members! You can read them over here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lFsg-rpecdw_y0iUGaYDsCf9VKtpOTSz/view?usp=sharing. Then please vote on whether you would like to approve them or not here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HJLBT3C. How you vote will be anonymous, but I ask that you only vote if you have participated in our group by attending at least one in-person IGSV meeting and/or have participated in online dialog through our Facebook page. This is an honor system, so please be respectful! The survey will remain open until 5 pm ET on May 7.
2) DC Statehood: Last week, the House passed the DC statehood bill! Contact Congressman Malinowski to thank him for his yes vote. Now it heads to the Senate, where there will be a much tougher fight. The GOP is pushing a bill for retrocession, in which the District would be folded into the state of Maryland, rather than becoming its own state. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton of DC explains (https://norton.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/norton-calls-retrocession-bill-proof-of-republican-fear-of-dc-statehood), “The retrocession bill has no support from either the District or Maryland. In fact, a huge majority of D.C. residents (86%) voted for statehood in a 2016 referendum. Retrocession would be inconsistent with that referendum vote and the District’s pursuit of self-determination.” Indivisible notes that this is about more than adding a star to our flag (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXQNWab7GMA). It’s about racial justice and righting the wrongs that have denied this historically Black city from full participation and representation in our democracy. Therefore, Indivisible is calling for nothing less than full statehood.
3) Vaccine: All NJ residents who are 16+ years old are now eligible for COVID vaccination! The state vaccine information page is here: https://covid19.nj.gov/pages/vaccine. Nearby CVS and Walgreen stores had available appointments earlier today!
4) Indivisible Census: Indivisible is studying the impact of the organization. To that end, they have partnered with a University of Maryland researcher to survey Indivisible group members. Please fill out this anonymous survey here: http://drfisher.umd.edu/IndivisibleCensus.html. Your responses will make the organization stronger!
