Week of April 4, 2021

1) SALT Deduction: New Jersey Congress members including Rep. Malinowski have made it a priority to advocate for repealing the cap on state and local tax (SALT) deductions that were put into place by the Trump administration. However, the repeal would be a very regressive policy, with most benefits going to the wealthiest people. Read up on the deduction here: https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/economy/news/2019/12/10/478598/repealing-salt-cap-not-top-priority-reforming-2017-tax-law/. Then contact Rep. Malinowski to let him know whether this is a policy priority for you. As the infrastructure bill is negotiated, this may be an issue that makes or breaks that bill.

2) Support Inclusive Communities: This has been a tough interval for our Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, especially with violence directed toward Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and with the ongoing trial of Derek Chauvin for murdering George Floyd. Continue to show support for the BIPOC community through friendship, advocacy, and education. Here is one set of resources for reflection this week: https://onbeing.org/civil-conversations-project/.

3) COVID: The numbers of new infections are near record highs in Hunterdon County and the rest of New Jersey (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/hunterdon-new-jersey-covid-cases.html). Please continue to mask up, get your shots, socially distance, and stay safe!

4) Combat Domestic Extremism: Rep. Malinowski has made it a priority to combat domestic extremism, as has the Biden administration (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/04/us/politics/domestic-terrorism-biden.html). Contact his office to let him know that you support these efforts. Contact Sen. Booker and Sen. Menendez’s offices to let them know that they should, too!
