1) IGSV September Group Meeting: Our next group meeting is September 19 from 3-4:30 pm via Zoom. The title is “Mars Should Never Wear Blue: The Dangers of Warrior Culture in U.S. Law Enforcement” and the discussion will focus on the causes of and solutions to police violence. The meeting will be led by our member Mike McCall, who is a retired FBI Special Agent and former US Army infantry officer. It should be a very timely discussion, given the ongoing protests, counter-protests, and police actions.
Please RSVP by email to email@example.com to receive the Zoom link.
2) Essential Workers March: Our friends at Make the Road NJ will be co-hosting a march tomorrow, Monday September 7, from 10-11:30 am in Elizabeth, NJ. They are demanding health and safety protections in workplaces as businesses increasingly reopen. You can participate in person (meet at 42 Broad Street in Elizabeth) or livestream on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/maketheroadnj/live/.
Co-hosts include essential workers from Make the Road New Jersey, New Labor, the Laundry Workers’ Center, New Jersey Citizen Action, Wind of the Spirit, the Anti-Poverty Network of New Jersey, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, SEIU 32BJ, Workers United – SEIU, United for Respect, and NJ21 United. Please show your support!
3) Corruption: Another week and another indication of how deep the corruption goes in the Republican party. The Washington Post reports that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy encouraged employees of his former business to donate to Republican candidates, and then DeJoy reimbursed them with bonus checks for the same amount. Such reimbursement to get around campaign finance limits would be illegal. Call all three of our Members of Congress to remind them that the pressure on DeJoy needs to remain significant, both to restore USPS services and to root out DeJoy’s corruption. 4) Support our Troops and Veterans: Jeffrey Goldberg reported this week in The Atlantic and multiple outlets confirmed that Trump has called Americans who died in war “losers” and “suckers.” Read the original article here: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2020/09/trump-americans-who-died-at-war-are-losers-and-suckers/615997/. Then share it far and wide, while letting service members in your life know that we support them.
Quote of the week: “I don’t get it. What was in it for them?” –President Trump, as quoted by Jeffrey Goldberg in The Atlantic, referring to fallen service members
