Week of August 23, 2020

1) IGSV August Group Meeting: Our next IGSV group meeting will be this Saturday, August 29 from 3-4:30 pm via Zoom. We will talk about the book “We are Indivisible”, written by co-founders of Indivisible Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg. We’ll summarize the book at the start of the meeting, so please attend even if you haven’t read the book! We’ll also talk about how IGSV has changed over the past 3+ years and where we might go from here.

Please RSVP by email to indivisiblegsv@gmail.com to receive the Zoom link.

You can see more about “We are Indivisible” here: https://book.indivisible.org/

2) Volunteer at the Woodlands Wildlife Community Day: The Western NJ Democrats Community Service Team will be volunteering at the Woodlands Wildlife Community Day on September 13 from 12-5 pm. There are still a few slots left. Please sign up with Susan DeNegre by email to sdenegre@comcast.net. 3) RNC: The Republican National Convention is this week. It is guaranteed to have lots of disinformation and outright lying. Be ready to defend issues to friends and family like mail-in-voting, which even the NJ GOP has started to attack as insecure. Trump has also continued to push COVID-19 disinformation, including attacking the FDA: https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1297138862108663808. Call our three Members of Congress to demand that they continue to protect our elections, defend the USPS, and stand up for evidence-based decisions related to health.

4) Climate Crises: There are two tropical storms headed for Louisiana and California has hundreds of wildfires (including one that has caused the evacuation of my alma mater UC-Santa Cruz). Call all three of our Members of Congress to let them know that we have not forgotten about the importance of pushing for meaningful climate change legislation. This problem is too large to be solved by individuals alone. Collective action is needed! Quote of the week: “Years from now, this moment will have passed. And our children and our grandchildren will look in our eyes and ask us: Where were you when the stakes were so high? … And we will tell them. We will tell them, not just how we felt. We will tell them what we did.” – Kamala Harris, VP Nominee Acceptance Speech
