Week of April 19, 2020

1) Demand More Testing: The Trump administration promised that we would have 27 million coronavirus tests by the end of March. Instead, the new Press Secretary is now celebrating 4 million by mid-April. This is not enough for us to reopen our country. Congressman Malinowski has pointed out that NJ has the highest rate of positive tests, an indication that we are not testing enough people (we’re only testing the sickest people who are likely infected). Call all three of our Members of Congress to demand that they get support for more testing from the Trump administration. 2) Thank Local Essential Workers: Congressman Malinowski is leading an effort to thank our local heroes who are working to keep us safe and healthy. Please write them a note or upload an image here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdnxu31SV03nN9uFKZYc0Ziva2DjzsDBKRhLHWfbtgO-lcDbw/viewform.

3) Stay Home: Despite the idiots who are protesting the closure of various states, and the Jacksonville, FL, decision to reopen its beaches, experts continue to insist that social distancing is important. You can read more about the protests here: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/19/opinion/coronavirus-trump-protests.html.

4) Earth Day: This year’s Earth Day will be different from any other, given the social distancing requirements. But, we can still call our Members of Congress to remind them how important the environment is to their constituents. The Trump administration has continued to chip away at environmental regulations that have dramatically improved our water and air quality since the first Earth Day in 1970. They also are actively making climate change worse through encouraging the use of fossil fuels. Celebrate the 50th Earth Day by letting our MoCs know that we expect a robust EPA that will protect us by protecting our environment! Quote of the Week: “The vast majority of Americans have voluntarily isolated themselves, at great financial and emotional cost, in order to protect their communities. It’s the most impressive civic-minded act I’ve ever seen in this country.” – journalist David M. Perry, https://twitter.com/Lollardfish/status/1251576884221095938
